Knotty Woodpecker is making handmade furniture with real hands and traditional hand tools.
Style
The styles aim for a clean & minimalist feel, influenced by the famous Ming Dynasty furniture (1300-1600s) and American hand tool techniques (1700-1900s).
The Ming Dynasty is known for the clean style, and complex joinery used in re-assemble applications that don’t use glue, or woods that can’t rely on glue strength.
Traditional hand tools means using hand planes, hand saws and chisels as used in the pre-industrial Americas. The difference in the final furniture piece is hard to explain but easily noticeable once you see it. This adds a grounding element to the style without sacrificing beauty or function.
TOOLS
Hand tools used instead of power tools brings up the popular question: Why?
The simplest explanation is that’s how I like to work. Using hand tools is a closer connection to the work, similar to an artist painting on canvas instead of creating digital art on a tablet.
Hand tool craftsmanship is a different process from the power tool process. For example: little to no sandpaper is used in this hand tool process, and everything is made entirely from solid wood. The result is unique textures and a handcrafted look of the final piece.
