These bowls are hand-carved with traditional hand tools: axe, adze, chisel and knife. This piece is unique, one of a kind.
It starts with a fresh cut log, split and cut to size, then carved to the bowl shape. After 4-8 weeks of slow drying, the bowl is re-carved to give it’s final texture and design. The chisel work leaves a hard, burnished finish that is most appreciated by your hands. Finally, finished with multiple layers of natural oil, bee wax and resin (all food safe). The time consuming process makes these bowls a rare style.
This piece is made from a local birch wood, cut from my own yard. The vibrant colors are the result of the spalting, as the wood aged over the summer before carving began. This bowl is 11-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches.
